  • Common interest does not find expression in market behaviour:
  • Corporations do not aim at creating employment; they employ people as few and cheaply as possible to make profits.
  • Health care companies claim they are in business to save lives; they provide health care primarily to make profits.
  • Oil companies do not seek to protect the environment except to meet regulations or to protect their public image.
  • The major banks do not seek to provide a caring and responsible service for savers and borrowers; they operate to maximinise profits and increase market share.
  • Through taxation, we, the consumers, also have to pay off the debts of the banks who engaged in market speculation. Our governments told us the banks were too big to fail. Paying off bank debts led to a cutback on social services, benefits and pensions.
  • The banks have given out numerous loans at low interest for people to buy a new home, for extensions on our current home or for purchase of expensive goods such as a new car or kitchen. They gave out loans to millions who found within weeks, months or years that they could not afford the repayments due to even a small change in personal circumstances or change in interest rates. This led many to despair.
  • The banks, market speculators and mortgage brokers brought about a crisis that takes years for recovery while, at the same time, sewing the same seeds for another financial crisis in the years ahead.
  • Easy credit continues until there is a massive and widespread credit default.
  • Corporate capitalism tries to persuade us there is no other way for citizens to live except as consumers.
  • The privileged elite with their palaces, private jets and mega yachts live a cocooned lifestyle at the expense of the slaves of the earth and our fragile ecosystem.  Are we also cocooned from the harsh realities of many worldwide living in appalling circumstances?
  • We have an army of thoughtful people, including many psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors, nurses, social workers, teachers in education, enviromentalists, coaches, facilitators, people of faith, writers, artists and mind/body/spirit workers. All are concerned with human happiness, peace of mind and reduction of human suffering. We are enviro-mental creatures. This army of caring people and caring people in the farming, business, political and scientific community need to work together to improve our quality of life and protect our vulnerable ecosystem.
